Critique: Steps + Tips

Critiquing Art should be a positive and helpful experience for all involved

  • First, observe and reflect on the artwork(s), what stands out to you the most in the artwork? Is there a clear focal point?
  • Is the artwork well crafted/ capture in your opinion?
  • Think of 1-2 positive remarks you can first give the artist. For example, "I can see that you pushed yourself to come up with a creative solution to the project idea" or "I really enjoy your use of the line and texture" or "Your photograph is very crisp and focused, well done!" or "you utilized the primary colors well to showcase a strong sense of emotion/ mood"
  • Avoid saying vague statements like, "your art is good/ bad" always try to utilize stronger art vocabulary.
  • Give 1-2 suggestions to artists to help them improve their artwork, for example "your first photograph is very blurry and it's difficult to see a focal point, perhaps reshoot it with better lighting and camera stability."
